This fly-drive tour showcases the very best of the Capital Region, starting with the iconic monuments, vibrant neighbourhoods and the renowned Smithsonian Museums of Washington DC. Then head to the majestic Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains bursting with natural beauty and the pretty wineries of Charlottesville. Colonial Williamsburg awaits before you wind your way past the gorgeous bays and sleepy villages of Maryland, learning about their naval and maritime history, before ending in Baltimore – known as ‘Charm City’.

Your day-to-day plan

Day 1-3

Arrive in Washington DC

Arrive in Washington DC and make your way by taxi or on the metro to downtown. There is so much to enjoy in the city, and you can explore by foot, on the efficient metro network, on a bus tour, bike or even on an electric scooter taking in the famous monuments of the White House, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and the Washington Monument. Not to be missed is the city’s amazing collection of museums many of which offer free entry including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. We recommend taking the metro over to charming Old Town Alexandria regularly voted one of the best cities in the USA. A national designated historic district, it is blessed with a pretty waterfront location, over 200 unique shops and restaurants, centuries old architecture, interesting museums, and a relaxed pace of life.

Day 4-5

Washington DC to Luray, 93 miles

Head towards the mountains today to Luray, located in the Shenandoah Valley and a great base to explore Shenandoah National Park. Surrounded by spectacular scenery including the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoy a day driving along pretty Skyland Drive stopping at the various lookout points and Luray Caverns, the largest caverns on the east coast or take one of the many short hiking trails to get up close to the natural wonders of the park.

Day 6-7

Luray to Charlottesville, 61 miles

Take in more incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains before turning inland to Charlottesville to visit Monticello, former president Thomas Jefferson’s home and World Heritage Site. Visit his beautiful plantation home and gardens which give an informative insight into his life. Experience Charlottesville’s historic downtown with over 120 shops and 30 restaurants, get an insight on a tour into university life at the University of Virginia, another World Heritage Site, or for wine connoisseurs explore the 40 wineries on the Monticello Wine Trail.

Day 8-9

Charlottesville to Williamsburg,123 miles

Drive to charming Williamsburg, part of the Historic Triangle that includes Jamestown and Yorktown. Stroll down the historic streets of Colonial Williamsburg, one of the most extensively restored 18th century towns in America, complete with working costumed interpreters, working tradespeople and historic taverns. Drive out to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America and see its archaeological sites and living history exhibits or drive to nearby Yorktown where the American Revolution ended.

Day 10-11

Williamsburg to St Michaels, 240 miles

Drive to Maryland today, making a pit stop in Norfolk which sits on Chesapeake Bay and is home to the largest naval based in the world. Enjoy breakfast along the stunning waterfront and walk it off on a stroll around its historic buildings and museums in the downtown area. Continue to Maryland, taking in the magnificent views as you drive along the 4-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Stay in the idyllic and charming town of St Michaels for the next two nights and soak up its maritime heritage inside its lighthouses and many museums including the popular Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Wander its tree-lined downtown area to see its 19th century architecture and boutique shops, enjoy its legendary seafood or get out on to the water in a kayak or on a cruise.

Day 12

St Michaels to Annapolis, 51 miles

A short drive will bring you to Maryland’s state capital Annapolis, a picturesque waterfront city, known as the ‘Sailing Capital of the World’. Start your stay by visiting the United States Naval Academy on a guided tour to get an insight into what nearly 4,500 men and women experience to become Naval Officers. Visit the State House, the longest US state house still in use, and wander along the brick laden streets on Maryland Avenue and window shop in its speciality shops. The bustling area of Main Street offers further shopping and dozens of restaurants which continues down to the harbour where you can relax with a drink in hand and watch the boats pass by.

Day 13-14

Annapolis to Baltimore, 30 miles

The grand finale of your trip around the Capital Region ends in the harbour city of Baltimore. Baltimore has a cool and vibrant vibe, particularly in Fells Point, located by the Inner Harbour where you’ll find some great restaurants, lively bars and unique shopping. You’ll also find the National Aquarium and the colourful Baltimore sign in the harbour. Take a tall ship cruise around the harbour and sail past the U.S.S Constellation and other US army ships and the famous Domino Sugar Refinery. Explore Fort McHenry, where the Battle of Baltimore took place and learn about the history of America’s stars and stripes flag.
