Day 1-2
Arrival Portland
Fly directly with British Airways to Portland, Oregon’s largest city lovingly called the ‘City of Roses’ which has majestic Mount Hood as its stunning backdrop. A vibrant and hip city, Portland has a laid-back vibe, with over 200 parks and gardens, interesting neighbourhoods some of which have a bohemian vibe. Make sure to experience its award-winning restaurants, colourful markets and taste the city’s delicious wine and craft beer. Visit the historic Pittock Mansion, the former home of Henry Pittock, a London born newspaper and business magnate and take in the incredible city views. Other attractions to see during your stay include the pretty Portland Japanese Garden and the nearby Portland Rose Garden.
Day 3-4
Portland to Newport, 132 miles
Pick up your car this morning and head to the coast in Newport, driving through the lush Willamette Valley, Oregon’s main wine region which is home to over 700 wineries. Get your first glimpse of the rugged and breathtaking Oregon coast in the pretty seaside town of Newport. Make a slight detour to climb to the top of Yaquina Lighthouse, Oregon’s only wooden lighthouse before settling into your hotel in Newport. Take a stroll on Newport’s wide sandy beach, visit the busy dock area and its unique shops, authentic taverns, seafood restaurants and its noisy sea lion population. See even more sea life such as otters, seals and octopus at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
Day 5
Newport to Florence, 49 miles
Your journey continues along Highway 101 to Sea Lion Caves where sea lions and their cubs take shelter every year and the quaint waterfront town of Florence which boasts several blocks of art galleries, gift shops and seafood eateries.
Day 6
Florence to Grants Pass, 186 miles
On the way to Grants Pass be sure to visit Heceta Head Lighthouse, a 56-foot-tall, late-19th-century beacon that shines the brightest beam of any lighthouse in the state. Don’t miss a thrilling buggy ride amongst the sand dunes at Oregon Dunes National Recreational Area, where buggy’s climb to the top of the sand dunes and along the golden sand beach. Continue to the classic river town of Grants Pass, the starting point for adrenaline-producing white-water rafting and jet-boat trips along the Rogue River, a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River that flows through some of Southern Oregon’s most dramatic scenery.
Day 7-8
Grants Pass to Bend, 240 miles
One of the tour's highlights today is the dramatic and jaw-dropping beauty of Crater Lake National Park. On the way stop at the historic Gold Rush town of Jacksonville, named as one of America’s coolest small towns. On arrival in Crater Lake National Park, drive the 33-mile drive around the rim to see the crystal-clear blue lake from numerous scenic viewpoints, take a scenic narrated cruise around the lake with a stop at Wizard Island and have lunch at the grand Crater Lake Lodge, built in 1915. Finish your day in the beautiful city of Bend, one of the most popular places to live in the state, home to a fabulous choice of restaurants, breweries, great nightlife and a whole host of outdoor pursuits from mountain biking and hiking to fishing and river rafting.
Day 9-10
Bend to Hood River, 143 miles
Spend the morning visiting Bend's unique High Desert Museum that showcases the rich culture of the area, through wildlife, including birds of prey and otters, shows and Native American exhibits. Continue north to Smith Rock State Park, a 650-acre tract of soaring rock spires bisected by a meandering river. Keep driving north to Hood River, which is nestled between the Cascade Mountains and Columbia River, and is home to countless outdoor activities due to its mountain and river surroundings. Choose from kiteboarding, windsurfing, mountain biking, hiking and fantastic skiing in the winter. Drive out to the south side of Mount Hood through pristine wilderness along Mt. Hood Scenic Byway to the historic Timberline Lodge and enjoy a cocktail or hot chocolate and take in the beautiful panoramic vistas. The Hood River area is also particularly well known for its great wineries and cherry orchards and its charming downtown has several unique shops and art galleries.
Day 11
Homeward Bound
Drive west along Highway 84 following the Columbia River to Columbia River Gorge. Stretching over 80 miles this incredible natural wonder was carved by ancient floods and framed by towering cliffs, lush forests and incredible waterfalls including Multnomah Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. Continue west to Portland Airport to drop off your hire car and catch your direct flight back to the UK.
